on deliberate practice

this is from a blog post on the topic of AI-skeptic programmers

but it's a very good analogy outside of that context too

to build skill of any worth with the instruments that are these models in their various interfaces, you need many daily/weekly/monthly reps of deliberate intentional practice

if you skip deliberate intentional practice you will not build much if any skill at using the interface

but to the extent that they deliver on it (if they even do), their users are getting what are essentially empty calories

depending on what the offer is as a whole / whether baking the skill into the product is in service of something worth that tradeoff
