here's @rsnous on the dread of using debuggers: "it's not sufficient to just give people a tool that theoretically does the thing. It has to be integrated in the experience in a way that works emotionally"

it's interesting, because I do identify with this (at least more than I identify with the 'computer science is about algorithmic thinking' characterization), but I also know plenty of people who do interesting stuff with code who don't really fit this profile or think this way

the idea that you can write a lot of code and/or get the computer to do a lot of stuff without necessarily needing to 'think like a programmer'

As an experienced software engineer, one hard part of using LLM agents well is unlearning all the learned helplessness.

A lot of things are now feasible to do, I just need to train my mind to understand that.

when people port enterprise software that aren't games completely straight they're inheriting a code structure that is a reflection of a corporate structure that doesn't apply to them. software isn't just solutions to problems, it's social embeddings of organizations

it's extremely obvious when you look at a google product and there are 3 different places for 3 different "settings". they're each the purview of a different team with its own power structure. when you make your own version of this software, you need to collapse those

the exact way that software engineering isn't real engineering also allows them to spend a lot of time building information technology tools

one thing learning programming by modding minecraft did for me is inculcate a deep love for runtime reflection and monkeypatching. the telos of software is to have a hard shell and a gooey and malleable interior. like an oyster or lobster

working with materials and tools you don't understand is the primordial infancy from which all mastery and awareness must begin.
obviously there are more ethical and less ethical modes-of-being-infant-towards the exterior world, and we can strive to be laudatory in our infancy.

the problem with "spec driven development" is that most software can't be spec'd up front

software is a creative act, where you figure out what you're building as you build it

you need to get your hands dirty in the details, and react to incremental versions

it's telling that all the examples of spec driven development are sorting a list or porting thoroughly tested code (like a js runtime or browser engine), which are the exception, not the rule. the vast majority of software doesn't have a spec – or if it does, the spec was created *after*
